Public sewers are those sewers that are owned by Wessex
Water. While Wessex Water is responsible for maintaining
public
sewers, homeowners are responsible for private sewers and
drains.
Private sewers are those sewers that the person constructing
them chose not to have adopted as public by Wessex Water
or its predecessor bodies. Drains are pipes draining
single properties to a sewer - whether public or private.
When a public sewer gets blocked, we will unblock the sewer
without charge. When a private sewer or drain gets blocked,
the property owner is responsible for unblocking it.
Our trained staff can tell you whether a blockage is in
a public or private sewer - it is important you check before
employing a drain clearance service.

We look after 20,000 miles of water mains and 40,000 miles of sewers – enough
