Shelley
Keen
BBC Local Radio
Former Lyneham Lanes Junior Bowling Champion, and currently
the 'early bird' of BBC local radio, presenter Shelley Keen
speaks to us about her childhood days, the daughter of former
RAF Lyneham air mover and civilian staff.
After the usual 'testing of the water' with various jobs
in her early employment days, she recalls that she stood
back to decide what job that would suit her bubbly personality
and indeed give her some inspiration to suppress her persistent
talkative manner.
Effervescent, lively and full of energy she needed to distribute
some of that 'buzz', and has now landed back on her feet
as an early morning presenter with local radio station's
BBC Radio Swindon and BBC Radio Wiltshire.
After an initial call to the BBC, seeking a new career in
the media, knowing that was what she really wanted, she started
her broadcasting skills, talking in an enclosed booth, possibly
chatting to herself!, with the self-written scripts for radio
adverts.
Shelley's first broadcasting experience soon arrived, it was
in the latter hours of the day, presenting a 'late night love'
show, north of the borders in 'bonny' Scotland. Moving south,
back to her child hood roots in Wiltshire, Shelley presents
the other end of the clock from 5am for two hours. Shelley's
Early Morning Show offers a wide range of entertaining and
awakening subjects, including the early morning energisers,
phone-ins from local celebrities, lively wakening music, complimenting
the other topical subjects. She has a bright and pleasing approach
to life and here cheerful early morning voice compliments everything
to get up out of the right side of the bed.
Shelley's daily chat to early morning risers, the Wiltshire
Celeb's include: the lively Susan
Pope, with her weird, wacky and wonderful webview, Phil
Collins from the Farmers Markets, The Cool Milkman, who has
all round air conditioning on his milk float minus heating
- trigger!
So from a former holiday rep, waitress, bank customer service
agent, to name but a few of her previous occupational skills,
we are delighted that the proud daughter of two former RAF
Lyneham parents has settled for the time being in the local
area, doing something that she really enjoys, chatting to the
listening audience over the Wiltshire airwaves.
Shelley, a scorpion by zodiac sign, is determined, fit, lively
young lady will not give up her aspirations lightly. She has
kindly spared a few moments from her energetic lifestyle and
answered a few questions for us.
What are your memories of Lyneham?
My memories of Lyneham are very fond. I remember going to Lyneham
Infant and Junior School. Lyneham Youth Club, walking my
dog at the slide park, rocket park and lost valley!! Going
to Brownies and Guides and the Rally Track.
When did you live here?
From the age of 8 to 11
What inspired you to local
radio?
I always knew I wanted to do some thing media
based. I’m quite a creative person and I love meeting
loads of new people and finding out their fascinating stories!
I got a fantastic break at a commercial station in Scotland
where I was Head of Commercial Production and eventually had
my own show…then I decided I wanted to move back to Wiltshire
and was really chuffed when I got the job at BBC Radio Swindon
and BBC Radio Wiltshire.
What do you like about broadcasting
in Wiltshire
I feel as if I know Wiltshire really well.
So the stories we feature are actually stories I am personality
interested in, because this is where I call home. Wiltshire
is such a diverse county, always loads going on and loads of
interesting people to meet.
How long have you been associated
with Lyneham?
I went to school at Lyneham and I was part of the Lyneham Lanes
Junior Bowling League which I just loved. Every Saturday I
would put on my little bowling shoes and spend the whole morning
at Lyneham Lanes. I really enjoyed it because it was the only
sport I was any good at. I used to score quite high and my
dad is a 10 pin bowling nut – so he was always really
chuffed when I managed a few strikes and spares…and they
did a wicked cheese and onion roll!!!
What are your hobbies, if you
have time that is.
I try to get to the gym 4 times a week. I love
to read, go to the cinema. I am a bit of a Speedway fan…..and
of course I try to go bowling as much as possible too!!!
What were the trophies you accomplished?
I got a few trophies in my time…and I still have them!!
We would like to pass on our personal thanks to Shelley and
BBC Wiltshire for the images and correspondence. |
