This October continued the recent trend
towards warmer and wetter Octobers. It also continued the
sequence
of
abnormally warm months during 2006 such that the September-October
pair and the summer half year (May to October) both broke
previous records for warmth by a wide margin. The average
maximum's for the month in Lyneham were two degrees up
on normal and the thermometers topped 19.9°C on the
10th. Following the spring and summer drought, we were
experiencing
better and higher than usual rainfall figures for the month.
A total of 83mm fell during the 31 day period which was
133%
of the norm. The wettest day of the month was on the 19th
where 23.8mm of rain fell within a twenty-four hour
period. Having noted these high downpours, there was remarkedly
12 days where
next to no fall was recorded. The higher monthly total
was accumulated within a couple of days with exceptionally
high volumes of rainfall within short periods, causing
localised flooding in the district. |
