The late-June hot spell continued for the first two days of July with 30°C exceeded at several locations in southern England. Lyneham reached 29.3°C as a day max and the maximum for the night was 23.8°C and thermometers never dropped below 18°C during the same period. The highest reading was 31.5°C on the 1st and Stratfield Mortimer (Berks), but 29.1°C was logged as far north as Lossiemouth (Moray) on the 2nd. At Aberdaron (Caernarfon) the minimum overnight 1st/2nd was 19.8°C. The 3rd, 4th and 5th were less hot, though still warm especially in eastern England, and there were further outbreaks of locally heavy rain in the west. Progressively the weather deteriorated during the month and 23.7mm of rain fell on the 29th. The months rainfall total was 99mm (3.9 inches) which is 150% of the mean average. Wind speeds were high for a summer month and with anemometers and wind vanes being heavily monitored to record wind and gusting conditions. The 6th of the month wind speeds recorded at 35 knots (40mph).
