News - Index - Television

Television is certainly one of the most influential forces of our time. Through the "Goggle-box" we are able to receive news, sports, entertainment, information both factual and fictional, and of course the old favourite commercials.

Advancement in technology, means you are able to have a wider choice of your viewing subject. The latest innovation Digital television, provides sound in excellent quality, crispness and images showing every detail in the picture you see. Freeview is the digital TV system which uses your television aerial. In some cases the current aerial may need replacing to improve signal reception and gain the most from digital. Signals are transmitted in the normal way from a transmitter. You need a set top box to decode them into normal pictures and sound for your set.

As technology improves, we are seeing advanced quality reception, both in audio and vision. We can now be receive high definition television with lifelike pictures and digital sound. The higher resolution produces clarity like you have never seen from a picture tube.

Lyneham is primarily served by the Mendip transmitter near Wells in Somerset, providing BBC1, BBC2, ITV West, Channel 4 and Channel 5 on the analogue system. You may receive Freeview digital tv through your aerial, but it is advisable to check with a neighbour if they have a satisfactory signal before investing in a television top decoder.

The television companies are changing broadcasting standards and it is anticipated by 2012 the whole of the country will be switched over to an improved digital service. An extensive maintenance project is currently underway to ensure engineers transfer the transmitter hardware over to a digital package by the planned March 2010 switch-over date.

Some areas of Lyneham have poor reception pockets, and hopefully the digital service should improve the reception quality in these areas. Alternatively, if you want interference free viewing, Sky television provides a better all-round picture.

TV License
TV Licensing's role is to collect the licence fee and to educate people, through advertising, community relations and direct communications, about the need to buy a TV Licence. We use various methods in which to achieve this which include sending reminders, processing queries, applications and payments, and maintaining an accurate licence database. We also use technology to identify and visit people who we believe are using a TV without a valid licence. Visit the TV Licensing website: www.tvlicensing.co.uk
