Roger Federer played the
shot of his life
Roger Federer played the
shot of his life as he reached his sixth consecutive US Open
final at Flushing Meadows with a virtuoso performance to
defeat fourth seed Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Federer
won 7-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and 34 minutes to set up a
final against sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro
of Argentina, who earlier in the day had beaten Rafael Nadal
in straight sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The shot came with
Djokovic serving at 6-5 down in the third set, already behind
at 0-30 with Federer finishing a compelling rally by scampering
back to the baseline and hitting a winner through his legs
that flew over the net and past Djokovic into the corner
for match point. Coming at such a crucial stage
of the match made the shot all the more remarkable and Federer
said: 'That's why it's the greatest shot I ever hit in my
life. I was in a difficult position, I had nothing to lose.
We (practice that) a lot actually but it never works.'
The fourth seed had played exceptionally well and made each
of the three sets competitive with the victory more a statement
of world No 1 Federer's brilliance, including a shot he called
the best of his life to set up match point, from there stretching
his winning streak at Flushing Meadows to 40 matches.
'It was an unbelievable match, I had a lot of fun again,'
Federer said. 'The end was fantastic with some great shots
but Novak had a great tournament and so it was great for
me to come through because it was tough.'
