News - Pictures in the News - September 2007

British troops handed over full control of Basra Palace
British troops handed over full control of Basra Palace to the Iraqi army shortly before 1am local time 3rd September 2007. A British spokesman in Basra, Major Mike Shearer said: “I can confirm that at 2200 local Iraqi time last night multinational forces based at the continuing operating base started to secure the route for the repositioning of troops from Basra Palace. At just before 1am local Iraqi time this morning, a bugler from Four Rifles sounded the advance. The Four Rifles Basra city battle group started to extract from Basra Palace. There were no major incidents during the operation and all troops were back at the continuing operating base."

September 11th Remembered
American flags fly at half mast in front of the US Capitol in Washington DC as America remembers on the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Ground Zero was the focus of many mourners, but ceremonies were also held in Washington and in Pennsylvania. Manu of the families of those who died in the attacks walked into Ground Zero to lay flowers.

Jody Aggett returns to Britain
Jody Aggett, 30, arrived at Heathrow airport early in the morning September 11th 2007 to meet his parents Lorna and Tony and his five-year-old son Ryan, who had not seen his dad since 2005. Jody had been sentenced to death penalty by the Thai courts, but this was commuted to a life imprisonment charge. He had been accused of being involved in manufacturing ecstasy, but he and his family always insisted he was innocent. Earlier this month the Thai appeal court quashed the sentence. Jody will move into his parents' Westlea home and share a bedroom with his son Ryan.
