Hamilton first Grand
Prix win
Lewis Hamilton drove a copybook race to win the Canadian Grand
Prix and take his first Formula One victory in only the
sixth race of his career. The Englishman led a dramatic
race throughout, driving with composure as the field fell
apart around him. He survived four interventions by the
safety car to head Nick Heidfeld of BMW Sauber and Williams's
Alexander Wurz. World champion Fernando Alonso finished
seventh and Robert Kubica survived a huge crash after rolling
his BMW. Prior to this win, 10th June 2007, Hamilton
had a third and four second-places in his first five races.

Beckham bows out with Liga title
Midfielder David Beckham capped his Real Madrid career
with a league title [17th June 2007]. Beckham, 32, has been
at Real Madrid, following his move from Manchester United,
for four
seasons but the 3-1 win over Mallorca sealed a first major
Spanish
honour
for
the
United States-bound star. It is the club's first La Liga success
in four years and they edged out Barcelona, who beat Gimnastic
5-1, because of their head-to-head record. The England star was
joined by his three sons on the pitch and was given an
emotional send-off, as was Brazilian left-back Roberto
Carlos, who is joining Fenerbahce after 11 years in the
Spanish capital. |

Falklands Heroes gather 25 years later
Thousands of Falklands veterans, families and residents
came together to mark 25 years since the islands were
liberated. A TV link-up to the South Atlantic let them remember
the 255 fallen British servicemen with a dual ceremony. On
London’s
Horse Guards Parade, Prince Charles, Tony Blair and Baroness
Thatcher joined ministers from today and
1982. Scenes from the military cemetery beside San Carlos,
where British forces landed, were broadcast on giant screens.
17th June 2007. Lady Thatcher,
81, got a massive cheer from Paras. And a plume of red, white
and blue smoke soared over the Palace as 49 aircraft — representing
all the squadrons in the war — did a flypast. A notable
absentee was the retired Vulcan bomber which broke records
for a non-stop
bombing mission.

Weather, it must be Glastonbury
Thousands of music fans
wallowed in thick mud at the start of the Glastonbury Festival
22nd June 2007. The
heavens
opened
as revellers prepared for a wet weekend at the world’s
biggest rock event.
Stalls struggled to keep up with demand for waterproofs
as ponchos, wellies, and even bin-bags were snapped up.
Others got in the spirit by wrestling in the mud. But as
the downpours
continued, hundreds of tents began to submerge in mud,
leaving many wondering where they could
sleep.
