Race for Life events across the UK
Thousands of women gathered across the nation on Sunday 4th June 2006 for the Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research. In London, 10,000 took part in the world record for the largest simultaneous stretch, involving 115,000 women. They were joined by fellow runners who limbered up in Edinburgh's Holyrood Park. In all, 24 events took place simultaneously for the first time in Race for Life's 13 year history.


Rooney given the all-clear
Striker Wayne Rooney has been passed fit to take part in the World Cup finals in Germany (7th June 2006). The 20-year-old, widely regarded as key to England's hopes, broke his foot on April 29 in a Premier League match for his club Manchester United against champions Chelsea. Wayne Rooney's return to rejoin England's World Cup squad in Germany is the perfect lift before the serious business begins against Paraguay on Saturday June 10th


England Duo Spare the Blushes

Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard netted in the last seven minutes to spare England's blushes. The 2-0 win ensured the Three Lions booked their place in the World Cup last 16.



Queen throws party for children
Buckingham Palace was transformed into a fantasy land of children's literature characters on Sunday 25th June, with Winnie the Pooh among those celebrating the Queen's 80th birthday. Youngsters, from all over Britain, were invited through a ballot, and the fun began well before they made their way past the guards at the Palace gates. Other characters at the party included Bob the Builder, Winnie the Pooh and Peter Rabbit.
