Pope John Paul II
passes away aged 84
Pope John Paul II, the voyager pope who helped conquer communism
and transformed the papacy with charisma and vigor, died Saturday
night after a long battle with Parkinson's disease that became
a lesson to the world in humble suffering. "Our most
beloved Holy Father has returned to the house of the Father,"
St Peter's Square remains dotted with impromptu memorials
of flowers and candles, while handwritten messages have been
stuck to street lamps with wax. The Archbishop of Westminster
paid a glowing tribute to Pope John Paul II, who he described
as 'one of history's greatest Christians' who would 'surely
be known as Pope John Paul the Great'. John Paul "changed
the role of the papacy," He had been in touch with every
level of the population, from young to old and rich to poor,
and he went beyond the Catholic Church. It's going to be very
tough for the Catholic Church to follow him." |
