Local Petrol Prices Still Skyhigh
Drivers across the region were burning with rage last night as petrol prices remained sky-high - despite a big fall in the price of oil.

Prices across the district have a wide price variation and the major supermarket chains are eager to have the competitive edge and keep prices lower than other brands.

Today, the cheapest unleaded fuel can be purchased from Asda in Swindon at 78.7p per litre.

The cost of fuel is dropping nationwide but the BP garage in Lyneham, which has unleaded fuel for 81.9p per litre is renown for always being more expensive than other local petrol stations.

Over the past 6 months the price of petrol at Lyneham's only petrol station, Chippenham Motors has been on average between 2 to 3p per litre above other outlets in the community. The Lyneham garage is fortunate to be located on a primary network road and has great marketing potential for low fuel prices.

Considering the cost of a barrel of crude sank to $35.7 in New York yesterday, down from a record $42.3 at the start of the month. Yet at pumps, motorists were still paying up to 85.9p for a litre of unleaded as "greedy" oil companies failed to pass on the reduction immediately.

That was considerably more than the average price after crude hit its record on June 1st. And it was far above the 78.51pence-per-litre cost in April, when crude was last $35.7 a barrel.
