Swindon Town Flying High
1st December 2009
A selection
of Swindon Town
Football Club players and the manager Mr
Danny Wilson recently visited Royal Air Force Lyneham as
part of their Military Awareness Programme. Following the
successful League One charity match during April 2009,
the last game of the 2008-2009 season, against local rivals
Bristol Rovers, a massive £6,500 was raised for the
Help for Heroes Charity.
Events on the day included a bucket collection by
military soldiers from 10 Signal Regiment in Corsham, the
famous Central Band of the Royal Air Force providing pre-match
music, a guard of honour for the palyers by 21 Signal Regiment
from Colerne and a flypast of a Hercules from RAF Lyneham.
As part of the continued support for the miliarty charities,
the high flying Leaque One football team have decided to
dedicate three matches this season as a way to raise more
money. Recently a group of players and the amanger payed
a visit to RAF Lyneham to have a tour around and also
a flight in one of the Hercules C130 aircraft.
Team manager, Danny Wilson said: “On behalf of the
Swindon Town players and staff I would like to all those
involved at RAF Lyneham for organising the day. It was thoroughly
enjoyable and I know everyone who attended will remember
the day for some time to come.”
Town midfielder Craig Easton took part in the activity and
commented: “It was a great experience – something
a lot of people don’t get the opportunity to do and
we are very grateful for the hospitality shown to us all
on the day. Some of the team coped better than others and
it was good to see the great job those at RAF Lyneham do
up close.”
Project Officer, Squadron Leader Liz Wills, also said: “It
was great to see the Swindon Town players enjoy the flight
and hopefully it will further advertise our Military Awareness
Matches on 5 December 2009 and 5th April 2010”.
This is all in-line with Swindon Town FC’s Military
Awareness Programme where they are supporting and raising
money for Help for Heroes & The Army and RAF Benevolent
Funds. On Saturday 5 December, for their next home match
against Leyton Orient, they are offering discounted tickets
to the military, their families, and those who directly support
the military (MOD civil servants and contractors). The tickets
will cost: £10
The 5th April 2010 game will be at home to Tranmere Rovers.
