Increased
Jet Flying over Wiltshire
26th February to 29th February
2008 inc
We have been advised that the increased
Jet flying over the Wiltshire skies is due to Tornado jets,
which are normally based at RAF Leuchars, being relocated here
at RAF Lyneham for a short period. This temporary accommodation
measure is due to the excessive winds over Scotland this week,
disrupting essential operational training.
There obviously
will be some increased noise, but residents are ask to
try and accept
this short period of increased flying so the crews can get
their operational status as soon as possible to assist
with other crews
in overseas conflicts. The operational training should primarily
be carried out during the day and it is anticipated no additional
night time flying will take place.
Royal Air Force Lyneham operates 24 hours a day, 365 days
a year, in support of UK foreign policy and NATO commitments
worldwide. In order to meet their obligation, they have a
wide-ranging infrastructure, which ensures the aircrew are
trained to the highest standards. Inevitably, the maintenance
of such high standards requires that they fly the Hercules
in the local area, and further a field. Invariably Lyneham
is used as a major diversion airfield and external visitors
are often seen visiting the station. The geographic location
of the Wiltshire airbase makes it ideally suited when adverse
conditions around the UK prevent other units carrying out
their primary tasks.
Nevertheless, RAF Lyneham strive to ensure that noise is
kept to a minimum, especially in the quiet hours. Without
doubt, there will be occasions when the station will have
to increase the tempo, and there is an expectation of increased
flying activity or noise.
The station apologises in advance for any inconvenience
caused to local people; they are aware that there is an impact
on the local community but please be assured all these flights
are operationally essential. |
