News - Hercules Tragedy - Tribute

Sergeant Robert O'Connor
Ground Engineer

Sergeant Robert 'Bob' O'Connor aged 38 and single, was an Engineering Technician serving with the Engineering Wing at RAF Lyneham, the home-base for all RAF Hercules.

Bob O’Connor joined the Royal Air Force as an Apprentice in October 1985. On completion of his apprenticeship, he was posted to RAF Lyneham, where he spent the vast majority of his Service career, excepting a short tour at nearby RAF Brize Norton.

He was held in the highest esteem and regard by his work colleagues and superiors for his knowledge, dedication and professionalism.

During his tours, he was an active sportsman and a keen participant in all aspects of the fabric of station life. He will be sadly missed by his loved ones, colleagues and friends, particularly the small section of engineers who worked closely with him. Sergeant Bob O'Connor co-founded the Swindon Branch of the Youth Bowling Club with Col Knight. Though his work commitments going to places all over the world Bob was forced to step down in 1999. The club is saddened by the tragic loss, but have acknowledged that through his shear enthusiasm and devotion, he help to establish a great community asset that is still thriving today the club member's are deeply grateful for Bob's inaugural work. All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at the time.
