News - Hercules Tragedy - HM Queen Elizabeth II Leads Tributes

HM Queen leads the tributes to the brave crew
3rd February 2005 08:00hrs GMT

HM Queen Elizabeth II has lead the tributes to the brave airmen who sacrificed their lives, serving for the realm in the continued attempt to bring Democracy and Peace over the world.

The Queen has sent a personal message to Station Commander Group Captain Paul Oborn:

"I was saddened to learn of the loss of the RAF Hercules in Iraq on Sunday. I should be grateful if you would convey my deepest sympathy to the families of those who have lost their lives."

Group Captain Paul Oborn
Station Commander Royal Air Force Lyneham
"The team was one of our best. Team Spirit, self discipline, professionalism in the air and a sense of humour were characteristics of this crew and we could all certainly learn a lot from them."

MP Mr James Gray
North Wiltshire MP
"This is a terrible tragedy for the base and the whole community of Lyneham. It is something that will have a significant effect on the whole community - including Calne, Malmesbury and Wootton Bassett."

Tony Blair
Prime Minister
"It is doubly tragic that it happened on a day of such hope in Iraq. The Iraqi people showed great courage in exercising their democratic rights and I know all of us welcome the birth of Iraqi democracy."

"The House of Commons would be united in paying tribute to the 'brave service personnel, both Royal Air Force and Army, on board the RAF Hercules which tragically crashed on Sunday"

Rt Hon Geoff Hoon MP
The Secretary of State for Defence
"The deaths of these Servicemen are especially poignant on a day when Iraqis were able to enjoy the freedom of democratic elections for the first time in many years. I can only echo the sentiment of the Prime Minister in recognising the sacrifice of these Servicemen."

Mrs Cathy Stanford
Head Teacher Lyneham's Infant School
"At this extremely difficult time our thoughts are with the families of all those affected by this tragedy. All of us at Lyneham Infants and Junior schools will do everything we possibly can to provide a caring environment which will offer support to the whole community in whatever way necessary"

Reverand Tony Fletcher
St Michael and All Angels Church Minister
"Our hearts and prayers go out to everybody affected by this and we shall try to be with them and eventually we will all come through it. You weep for those who weep, and mourn for those who mourn."

Cllr Jenny Jardine
Lyneham & Bradenstoke Parish Council
"Our thoughts bleed for the families involved. They were our first thought. The whole village will share in the grief. It's very much one community, the base and the village"

Major General Mike Gould
Commander of the USAF's Third Air Force,
"We work in a very dangerous business and operational losses are a reality, but the loss of each person is always deeply felt. These individuals were dedicated to a cause bigger than themselves. They made the ultimate sacrifice so that all of us can live in a freer, safer world. They are true heroes."
