Lyneham Scouts Parading their
Flags
26th April 2009
Scouts, Guides and Brownies had fun in the
sun on their annual St George's Day parade at Lyneham this
year. Proud villagers and friends watched smartly uniformed
youngsters parade their colourful unit flags in front of
St Michael and All Angel’s Church Lyneham.
St Michael and All Angel’s Church held a traditional
service, providing the youngsters a chance to reaffirm their
promise to the movement in a place of worship. This year
the Scout
group decided to attend the local church instead
of their normal gathering at Corsham church, a decision that
has been warmly welcomed by church verger Babs Taylor who
was extremely pleased the youngsters have paraded at Lyneham,
the first time in her memory as verger.
The Church was well attended for the service and Babs Taylor
hopes that this trend will continue for many years to come.
The weather this year was perfect, as the sun shone and the
sky was blue, which made a lovely change from the usual,
cold, wet and windy parades of previous years.
This parade
is an important part of the scouting and guiding year and
allows the flags of all the groups to be displayed and
paraded through the village.
The scout movement traditionally marks St George's Day with
a parade on the closest Sunday to 23rd April. Scouts founder
Robert Baden-Powell chose St George as the scouts' patron
saint because he embodied good scouting qualities such as
faith, truthfulness and dedication to helping others.
The Scouts and Guiding
Movement attend the Remembrance
Service and parade their flags along side the RAF Standards
so this was a great opportunity to display the flags on another
important occasion.
Reverend Jesse Holland, the Parish Church
vicar, Babs Taylor and the PCC would like to thank all who
attended. "When time and other commitments allow we welcome
all to our Family Services."
