Heaven's
Open with Race for Life Kindness
16th June 2007
Rain did not stop three spirited Lyneham
ladies from raising money for so many friends, family members
that have either had, going through treatment or have sadly
passed away from
cancer.
On Saturday 16th June, Lyneham ladies Babs Taylor
(Parish
Verger)
St Michael
and All
Angel's Church, Dee Bunney and Tiffany Macaulay from St
Andrew's Church took
part for the first time in the 'Race for Life' at Lydiard
Country Park, Swindon.
The afternoon started off with a
stretch and warm up, but really could have called it a
'cool down' has the heavens opened and they
all got rather wet before setting getting into our designated
places for the race start.
The skies eventually cleared and
the sun broke through the dark and cloudy skies allowing
the
runners
to dry off. The atmosphere was
fantastic
and there were so many children
taking
part from toddlers to teenagers. Enthusiastic Dee, Tiffany
and Babs did complete the course in
a pacing 51 minutes, but the ladies wanted to enter for
the fun and ensure the monies raised went to a deserving
cause.
At
the end of the race the competitors were all given 'Race
for Life' medals, a goody bag and a bottle
of
water.
Walking
and jogging is great exercise and works up a thirst,
this liquid drink was greatly appreciated to rehydrate
some of the exhausted and aching bodies and legs.
The Lyneham ladies have been so inspired by the fun of
the day, the amount of local support for the fundraising
charity
and have decided to do it all again next year and
hope to run the course
and raise
more
money
for
Cancer
Research.
The three Lyneham ladies have collectively raised
an amazing £543
for the research charity. If you would like to donate some
worthy cash to the three fundraisers, please contact Babs
Taylor through the church
office
Over 4700 women came together and walked, jogged or ran
the 5km course to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Since
it started in 1994, Race for Life has grown to become the
UK’s biggest women-only fundraising event. All the
money raised by the participants helps fund the crucial
work of Cancer Research UK – the world’s leading
independent organisation dedicated to cancer research.
So far, over two million women of all ages have run, walked
or jogged to raise over £140 million in sponsorship
for the charity. This year Cancer Research UK hope to raise £60 million
for our life-saving work by bringing an amazing 800,000
women together to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Women of all ages and all levels of fitness take part
in Race for Life. Some of the comments
from participants: “It
doesn’t matter if you run, jog or walk – it’s
all about taking part and raising money for cancer research.” and “The
feeling that you get from seeing all those women brought
together for one great cause is very humbling and very
uplifting.”
