News - Index - Two Fires in Lyneham

Preston West Farm

Blaze sparks fear of explosion
Gazette & Herald
26th April 2007
www.gazetteandherald.co.uk
A BATCH of empty gas canisters feet away from a burning car sparked fears of an explosion at a Lyneham farm at 12.19am on Monday 23rd April 2007

Firefighters feared that the blaze, at Preston West Farm in Preston Lane, would spread to the canisters which were thought to be full. However the canisters were empty and waiting for refilling. Firefighters used breathing apparatus and one hose reel to tackle the blaze and the fire was finally out by 2.36am.

Julie and James Daniell and their three children, who used to live at the farm, had just
moved to Wootton Bassett when the fire started and the new household had not moved in.

The cause of the blaze is unknown and arson has not been ruled out. Sergeant Andy Fortune said police were waiting to hear back from the fire brigade as to whether arson was involved.

Victoria Drive Estate

Firefighters were called to a house in Lyneham this lunchtime following reports of smoke billowing from the windows.

Crew members from Calne, Westlea and RAF Lyneham's Defence Fire Section braved the toxic fumes at the property in Lyneham's Victoria Drive estate wearing breathing apparatus and eventually brought the flames under control. The fire had started in a settee on the ground floor. How it happened is being investigated.
