Church End Bus Shelter

Stagecoach Bus hits brand new bus shelter in Lyneham village
Lyneham Village

14th March 2003
This dinner time an elderly lady narrowly misses being hit when a Stagecoach bus hits the new Church End bus shelter. Early reports indicate that the midday bus service to Chippenham has accidentally hit the shelter, which was in the process of being erected under a project to provide the village with replacement bus shelters.

The elderly lady was unhurt and shocked has been taken to a local medical service. All the glass panes were damaged and the structure was severely distorted. The new bus shelter outside Londis store, will have to be removed as it is an unsafe condition.

Lyneham villagers open their mouths in astonishment , "The bus shelter was only put up today" one recalls. "Was he speeding?".

It was not long ago, that a lorry completely demolished one of the other bus shelters before this renewal project commenced.

Update and Background to Lyneham's New Bus Shelters
Extracts from a letter sent to the Lyneham & Bradenstoke Parish Council.

Over the past few weeks RingwayParkman have installed 6 shelters in Lyneham, from Melsome Rd to outside the VCS/Londis shop in the center of the village. Stagecoach will be contacted shortly to ask them to provide time table information. In the meantime information cards will be provided, which will advise on Travel Line information telephone numbers and where to report damage/vandalism.

Unfortunately, a new shelter installed on Wednesday 12th March outside VCS was demolished by a Stagecoach bus on Friday 14th March. RingwayParkman contractors were on site opposite and were able to remove the damaged shelter safely and quickly. I have been informed by the contractors and manufacturer of the shelter that the toughened safety glass will break into small pieces (like a windscreen).

Each shelter is installed a recommended distance from the kerb edge which should ensure that they are not impacted by a vehicle. It is expected to replace the damaged shelter in the near future.

Further shelters at Pound Close to BP Garage (4 in total) have been ordered and we are expecting delivery in Early to Mid April.
