News - Index - M4 Closure Overnight July 2006 - Back

with thanks to the Communications Team InterRoute
Map Property of InterRoute
part of the Highways Agency

M4 Planned Closure
The first overnight closure will take place on one of the following two dates scheduled for the demolition process:

21.00 Saturday 1st July to 10.00 Sunday 2nd July
21.00 Saturday 8th July to 10.00 Sunday 9th July

We will update you as soon as the second M4 planned closure details become available.

Eastbound Traffic
Light Vehicle Only: Leave the M4 at J17 and take the A429 north to Malmesbury, then east on the B4042 to Wootton Bassett. From Wootton Bassett take the A3102 towards Swindon. Rejoin the M4 at J16.

Heavy Vehicles: Leave the M4 at J17 and take the A350 south to Chippenham to join the A4. Follow A4 eastwards to Calne, Then the A3102 north to Swindon (via Lyneham and Wootton Bassett). Rejoin the M4 at Junction 16.

Westbound Traffic
Both Heavy and Light Vehicles: Leave the M4 at J16 take the B4005 to Wroughton then A4361 south to join A4 at Beckhampton. Follow west to Chippenham via Calne. At Chippenham, follow the A350 north to join M4 at Junction 17.

We have been in consultation with the InterRoute Communication Manager, Mr Stephen Osborne-Brown, regarding the increased overnight traffic through Lyneham and in particular Wootton Bassett. We raised concern that both projects will conflict owing to the major sewage works in progress on the Wootton Bassett High Street. We have been assured that both InterRoute and Wessex Water have been in regular communication and planned works at the sewage repairs, should not affect the planned diversions.

The single westward diversion route has been planned to alleviate congestion routes through Wootton Bassett on the southbound traffic, should the Wessex Drainage rework be still in progress.
