A
GROUP of mums from Lyneham have begun a petition calling for safety measures
following the accident involving Mandy Haynes and Jackie Falconer. They
say it demonstrated the need for the zebra crossing, which their children
use daily to get to Lyneham Primary School, to be upgraded to a pelican
crossing that would feature push-button controlled traffic
lights.
Mum-of-four Vicki Child, 34, said: “If
it had been a child involved in the accident it would not
bear thinking about. This is a major school run
and every time children use the crossing it is a danger
to them.”
Mum-of-two Jenny Eggl, 23, saw the accident.
She said: “I feel for the van driver who had stopped
to allow the women to cross the road – he has to
live with the image of seeing the women flying up in the
air after he hit them.”
The mums are going to ask the school to
put copies of the petition in the pupils’ school
bags. They also started a Facebook group ‘don’t
let our children die on this road in Lyneham’ that
attracted 77 members in just a few days, and an online
petition to No 10 Downing Street gained 35 signatures.
Mrs Child said: “We have heard that
a pelican crossing will not be put in until there is a
fatality on this road. We will not wait for one of our
children to die before something is done.”
