A man has been released on bail after police found a sawn off shotgun and cartridges
during a raid his Lyneham home on Thursday.
The 34-year-old man was arrested and interviewed at Gablecross
Police Station, Swindon. The arrest came after local informants
told the Neighbourhood Policing Team about the gun.
Inspector Mark Levitt of Wootton Bassett police described
the arrest as "an excellent result from the Neighbourhood
Policing Team". He said that the team had received reports
from a variety of sources about the existence of the weapon. "The
execution of the search warrant resulted in the removal of
a potentially lethal weapon from the village and the investigation
is continuing," he said.
The Lyneham Neighbourhood Policing Team is a collaboration
of Wiltshire Police and Ministry of Defence Police. The team
has recently set up a community police post in the village
where villagers can drop by with any concerns or complaints.
Insp Levitt added: "In the team's early months we have
seen a noticeable reduction in anti-social behaviour and
fear of crime. The recently opened community police post
in the village will help to establish strong local community
ties and will make contact with the police team much more
accessible."
