Call to boycott pricey petrol
Gazette and Herald

ANGRY Lyneham people are calling on motorists to boycott the village petrol station next week to protest about soaring fuel prices. In recent weeks, the village website has been inundated with messages from residents complaining about the price of petrol.

Many villagers claim they are travelling into Swindon and Chippenham to fill-up, to save themselves £3 a week on petrol bills.

In protest, the site is urging people to snub the BP garage on the Chippenham Road, for the whole of Friday August 13. Website manager Andy Humm, of Sycamore Close, Lyneham, said: "The prices just seem to be getting higher and higher. The price of a litre of unleaded is 82.9 pence per litre at the moment, which is a little lower than it was a few weeks ago, but is still a lot higher than other village petrol stations in the area."

"It seems that we are being penalised just because we are on a good travel route from Swindon. BP also have no competition since the Murco garage in the village closed, so they seem to be able to hike it up when they want to," he added.

"There have been many messages sent to the website forum in recent weeks from irate people. "We came up with idea of the boycott knowing that it won't probably make that much difference to a company as big BP, but just because we feel we need to make a point," said Mr Humm.

"Even if we fail to make a noticeable dent on BP's profits, it might muck up their deliveries for the following day and show that we're not happy. Villager Denis Hickman, 52, agreed: "I have a Nissan Micra, but rather than pay the prices here I go into Asda in Swindon. That saves me around £3 every time I fill up, which doesn't seem a lot, but it mounts up when you consider it over months and a year."

He added: "I hope that a lot of villagers keep to the boycott. I would like to be able to buy petrol on my own doorstep, but if it means saving money I will go further afield."

"We would urge everyone living in Lyneham or travelling through on August 13 to boycott the station and make a stand against the extortionate prices we are being charged for petrol."

Mr Stephen Andrews, managing director of Chippenham Motor Company said the increases are imposed upon garages by the fuel refiners. "As a local petrol station we have very little influence over the general pump prices. Indeed, we have kept the prices in Lyneham as low as possible by reducing even further our very small margins.

"This has resulted in our BP site at Lyneham consistently remaining 1p a litre cheaper than Calne, and for a considerable time the same price as Wootton Bassett stations. Any member of the Lyneham community that wishes to have factual information on our current margins is welcome to contact me at the dealership."
