Three houses in Bradenstoke
were badly damaged when a 4x4 crashed into them before coming
to rest in a front garden. The properties on Hollow Way,
the main street, had their front porches destroyed and tyre
marks left on the side of the houses.
The 4x4 also struck a car coming the opposite direction
down the narrow street and its driver was taken to hospital
with whiplash injuries. The 4x4 travelled around 100 metres
before it stopped in the front garden of a house set back
from the road. It happened on April 22 at 6.30pm.
Sergeant Simon Wright, one of the first officers on the
scene, said: “Police promptly attended and arrested
the driver of one of the vehicles on suspicion of drink
driving and also dangerous driving.”
“It was amazing that nobody was injured. The driver
was taken to Swindon custody. He was breathalysed and dealt
with the following day because of his high alcohol intake.
He is on police bail while we make some further inquiries.”
About 50 shocked residents were on the street taking in
the scene, and officers from the neighbourhood policing
team, officers on general police duties and PCSOs were
there with paramedics and fire fighters.
Two damaged cars were taken away and the three porches
are no longer standing.
A woman who lives nearby, who didnt want to be named,
said it was a mircale nobody was killed. She said: “I
couldn’t believe what had happened. Children often
gather in the porch so it was a miracle that nobody was
seriously injured or killed.” Her husband said: “A
young lady was screaming. She was about to get in to her
car when she decided to take the wheelie bin out and then
the 4x4 hit her car.”
