Local Public Houses - Calne

Public houses are an important part of Wiltshire's social life. The pub is more than just a shop where drinks are sold and consumed.

For centuries it has been a place where friends meet, colleagues 'talk shop' and business people negotiate deals. The place where people gather to celebrate, play games or to seek quiet relaxation.

Due to changes in the law, the pub is now a place for families. It is re-establishing itself as the place to eat, a tradition that all but disappeared after the last war. Many provide affordable accommodation, particularly in rural areas.

Popular Pub names! The Rovers Return, the Queen Vic, the Bull and the Woolpack are all well known English pubs, but you can't have a drink in any of them. That's because they exist only in soap-opera fiction. They illustrate how the pub is at the heart of the community, in villages, towns and cities, all over England.

The Black Horse
Main Road
Cherhill
Calne
SN11 8UT
Tel: +44(0)1249 813365

The village of Cherhill was once a stop on the London-Bristol coaching route. Today's travellers can be sure of a warm reception and excellent hospitality if they break their journey at the Black Horse. The inn has a large car park and a beautiful beer garden.

During your visit the staff welcome you into a very pleasant bar with a log fire, traditional decor and furnishings, where it is a real pleasure to relax with a pint of one of their many real ales or a glass of wine. The wine list offers a fine choice, with many wines available by the glass (two sizes), a perfect complement to the first-class food served every lunchtime and evening.

The main menu's change seasonally and there is a Chef's Special board that changes weekly offering a large variety of choice. Equal attention is paid to preparation and presentation, and both of these menus cater very well for the vegetarians amongst us. Theme evenings to feature cuisines from around the world.

South of the village is the ancient earthwork of Oldbury Rings and one of Wiltshire's most famous white horses cut into the chalk next to the Landsdown Monument. There are many other interesting sights in the locality, notably the Avebury Stone Circle, one of the most remarkable ritual megalithic monuments in Europe. Many villages had their gangs of highway robbers in the 17th and 18th centuries, but Cherhill's were just that little bit different they carried out their dastardly deeds completely naked!
