Local Public Houses - Avebury

Public houses are an important part of Wiltshire's social life. The pub is more than just a shop where drinks are sold and consumed.

For centuries it has been a place where friends meet, colleagues 'talk shop' and business people negotiate deals. The place where people gather to celebrate, play games or to seek quiet relaxation.

Due to changes in the law, the pub is now a place for families. It is re-establishing itself as the place to eat, a tradition that all but disappeared after the last war. Many provide affordable accommodation, particularly in rural areas.

Popular Pub names! The Rovers Return, the Queen Vic, the Bull and the Woolpack are all well known English pubs, but you can't have a drink in any of them. That's because they exist only in soap-opera fiction. They illustrate how the pub is at the heart of the community, in villages, towns and cities, all over England.

The Red Lion
High Street
Avebury
Wiltshire
SN8 1RF

The Red Lion is rather special. Uniquely, it is situated actually inside the Avebury stone circle, one of Europe's best known archaeological features. And with its thatched roof, log fire, real ales, centuries-old history.

The Red Lion is set in the tiny village of Avebury which is three miles in radius and some 2000 years older than Stonehenge! The pub is 400 years old and located at the centre of the stone circle where every six weeks a pagan festival is held. It is in the Top Ten list of most haunted pubs in the country and has been seen on TV as such. The main ghost is that of an old landlady who was killed here by her husband.

For those of you brave enough to stay, we have accommodation rooms available and you are locked in at night! Ghosts aside, this destination food house is a lovely thatched listed cottage with cobbles and a large mill stone in the car park and low ceilings, beams and traditional dark wood furniture inside.

Food is served from an extensive main menu and specials board, offering a good selection of quality pub fayre with a good range of wines available to complement the experience or a choice of real ales if preferred.

The Wadworth brewery is only two miles away! Out clientele are generally tourists and visitors to the festivals so for those of you who appreciate a venue uninterrupted by TVs, machines and the like, this is a pub to come and enjoy.

There is a large restaurant with a A-La-Carte menu as well as Traditional Sunday lunches, Steaks, Vegetarian dishes and not forgetting its well known Home-made pies
