Eating Out - Sunday Lunch

Eating out is an important part of our family social life. What a better way to enjoy your sunday lunch with a relaxing drink and have the traditional roast served and great, no dishes to wash up afterwards.

Spoil the home chef for a change and let them put their feet up, enjoying the Sunday roast too. It appears someone else's culinary expertise, always tastes different and as a matter of choice often tastes better.

The cook of the house, need not spend hours in the kitchen, with all the preparation, vegetables, basting the joint, tied to the stove. Many local pubs feature the great sunday roast, offering top quality food to make the most of our out-of-work time. Browse through the local villages below, to see where the next course is being served. If you have recently enjoyed a sunday lunch served locally, let us know and we can include it here. Completely refurbished in 2004, the pub today has a distinctly contemporary feel with a particular emphasis on serving good quality pub food. Diners can choose between excellent value bar meals or descend the few steps down to the excellent restaurant/carvery which is often busy and especially on Sunday lunchtimes, when booking is essential. Corporate facilities also include a new conference/meeting room available for hire.

History of Sally Pussey
Sarah Purse was the licensee of The Wheat Sheaf Inn on the Wootton Bassett to Swindon road until she passed away in 1885 and was laid to rest in Lydiard Tregoze Churchyard. During her reign it is said that she possessed extraordinary powers as a faith healer or both men and beast.

She became somewhat of a living legend because of this and, although a mere 5’1” high, had an awesome reputation among her regulars who included some of the burly men building the Great Western Railway line.

Rumour has it that on more than one occasion she physically ‘put them out’ with not a hint of resistance. Like all good legendary figures Sarah had a name of her own. By various rolls of the Wiltshire tongue she first became Sarah Puss, then Sah Puss and finally Sally Pussey – or Aunt Sally as she became better known.

Around 1971 it was decided to revive the legend of aunt Sally and re-name the Wheat Sheaf the Sally Pussey’s Inn.
