Eating Out - Index - Pubs

Public houses are an important part of Wiltshire's social life. The local pub is a central feature of our community and provides valued leisure and recreational opportunities for the customer.

A wide variety of pubs have evolved and become excellent eating out venues to enjoy others company, have a relaxing drink, and more often than not, offer top quality food to make the most of our out-of-work time.

The Red Lion is rather special. Uniquely, it is situated actually inside the Avebury stone circle, one of Europe's best known archaeological features. And with its thatched roof, log fire, real ales, centuries-old history and even resident ghosts, it really is a classic ancient English country pub. There is a large restaurant with a A-La-Carte menu as well as Traditional Sunday lunches, Steaks, Vegetarian dishes and not forgetting its well known Home-made pies.

The Red Lion is set in the tiny village of Avebury which is three miles in radius and some 2000 years older than Stonehenge! The pub is 400 years old and located at the centre of the stone circle where every six weeks a pagan festival is held. Spookingly enough, it is in the Top Ten list of most haunted pubs in the country and has been seen on TV as such. The main ghost is that of an old landlady "Florrie" who was killed here by her husband.

For those of you brave enough to stay, we have accommodation rooms available and you are locked in at night! Ghosts aside, this destination food house is a lovely thatched listed cottage with cobbles and a large mill stone in the car park and low ceilings, beams and traditional dark wood furniture inside.

Food is served from an extensive main menu and specials board with a good range of wines available to complement the experience or a choice of real ales if preferred. The Wadworth brewery is only two miles away! Out clientele are generally tourists and visitors to the festivals so for those of you who appreciate a venue uninterrupted by TVs, machines and the like, this is a pub to come and enjoy. The Red Lion is the place to wet your whistle!. More..
