Wiltshire's industrial heritage provides a
fascinating look at times gone by when "God's Wonderful
Railway" ruled the west. The original hilltop market
town of Swindon was mentioned in the Domesday book, but it
was Brunel's Great Western Railway in the 1840s which made
Swindon one of the most important industrial towns in the
world.
When the Great Western Railway closed in 1986, it was the
end of an era. For over a decade, machines stood idle and
tools lay undisturbed in the slowly decaying works. Now these
once derelict buildings have been turned into multi-million
pound visitor attraction. |
