In the early 80's my father bought and renovated a derelict empty old cottage "59 the Green" for us to live in a as a family. When he retired from the R.A.F they sold it (this broke my heart!)and moved to the coast. How lovely it has been for me to find a picture on your web site showing when it had it's traditional thatch back in the 40's before it fell into disrepair and to learn of it's history. I knew it was an old cottage from the 1600's or even before but to see it is now to believe it. Thank you so much as I have had a wonderful trip down memory lane from my years as a forces child in the village to when I left home from The Green and the from the cottage that I once and still do love so much.

I thought you might be interested to know that in the process of tracing my family tree I've discovered that my great grandfather Edward Henry Tomson was the perpetual curate at the church in Lyneham from 1844 - 1854. One of his sons, my grandfather, James Richard Dutton Tomson, also became a clergyman. The family is listed as living in Lyneham at the time of the census in 1851. I would like to visit Lyneham this year and visit the church and to see the old vicarage where the family lived.

I'm trying to locate any living relatives of the Vockins family of Lyneham House around the time of WW1.
I know that John Carroll Vockins, the only son of Edward and Margaret Vockins had two sisters, Lois (born 1892) and Ruby (born 1898). Sadly, John was killed in action in 1917. He was awarded two medals, one of these came into my possession and I would like to try and find a living decendant to reunite it with. Interestingly i have been unable to find any current info on Lyneham House. is it still standing? Any help you can offer will be appreciated, however I also found an address in Daniel Street, Bath that I will be following up.

Can anyone assist me? I'm looking to contact Richard Warren who lives (or lived) in Bradenstoke. Richard and I sold goods to a customer who has recently passed away. I have been asked by the family to find Richard and notify him. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I just discovered your page and find it most interesting...I would love to know the history of Cowleaze Copse..how it came by it's name.
I have memories of the dump truck from the air base coming up our village and making it's depost...all the villagers loved this event and everyone came out to rake thru what was dumped. Great treasures were found and the next shipment was eagerly awaited. This must date back to mid to late fifties.

I used to live briefly in Harrow road, Lyneham 1957/8/9....attending the local primary school which was at the 'bottom of our garden'! My father was based on camp and we left in May 1959 to go to Germany. Going down memory lane, I would love to know if there are any photos of 'that era' of the camp and the village! My father was 'Mike Nunns'.

Very interesting website - I found the flax/linen information particularly exciting - we grow a small amount of flax for fibre over near Tetbury and would really love to hear from anyone who may have more history and/or photos of the flax industry at Lyneham. If anyone knows of any old machinery please let us know. We go to shows and let people see how it used to be processed and worked. Many thanks. Ann

Dear All,
It is with great sadness that I place a post relaying the news that Kathleen "Joan" Hutchins formerly of 5 St Michaels Lyneham, passed away peacefully on Saturday 5th November 2011 in Watford General Hospital, Hertfordshire.

Joan had lived in St Michaels Close since 1959 until she had to move in June 2008 after suffering a fall.

She will be sorely missed by her grand children Allison & Pete and Iain & Jo, great grandchildren Tiegan and Callum and neice Ruth and nephew Don.

Iain Hoare
