Lyneham Old Maps

Lyneham village is remarkably different nowadays with the majority of the parish afforded to the military estate and their housing accommodation. We have a history in the making and many people have asked what the village looked like prior to the late 1930's when the Air Ministry decided to purchase the arable and pasture land around Lyneham Court and Cranley Farm for use as a new airfield. With the expansion schemes for the Royal Air Force the area was surveyed in 1936 for possible airfield use in 1937. The intention was to use the base as an aircraft storage unit.

Initial surveys revealed that the water table would be to near the surface and the Air Ministry looked at other contributory factors, geographical location, height above sea level and climatic conditions and decided the water table issues would not be a deterrent to build on the land. Two years later the builders moved in. Hedges were dug up, the area was ploughed level with horse drawn ploughs and the old moated manor house of Lyneham Court, built before 1539 and original home of the Lords of the Manor, was demolished. The landscape and scenery was to change, and in between additional housing estates being built over the years, Lyneham's use and history changed.

Spare the opportunity to browse some of the very interesting Tithe and first Ordinance Survey maps drawn of the parish. Owing to the images being digitally stored on Lyneham Village Online, please be patient while they download. We have had to keep them fairly large in size to ensure clarity is not lost in these excellent drawings. If you wish to get reproductions of the images, they can be obtained through the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, Chippenham.
