N & M Baker Garage
Chippenham road
Lyneham
Many village residents can remember quite clearly the Swindon Road Garage was used as a Jet filling station and primarily selling the larger classic type cars in the early seventies. Damliers and Jaguars were often seen on the forecourt.

In the mid seventies, there was once a unique pink coloured Damlier that stood on the court for weeks. It captured the eye of one of the famous rock band Pink Floyd members, who wanted this stylish car to be an icon for the band's name.

Several days after he purchased this 'different car' the other group members turned up at the garage, made a decent offer for the Damliers cars and bought the complete stock, any colour any condition. Presumably to take them back to their local garage and get them refurbished and sprayed pink.

The closer image of the garage (second down) taken in the 70's shows the larger stylish cars on sale. Damliers, jaguars, and it looks like some Rolls Royce behind the garage buildings.

A village resident vividly remembers her later teenage days working on the forecourt and in the office of the building on the far right. She recalls that was the time when hot-pants were in fashion and having to deal with all the passers by and visitors to the garage. Wolf-whistles too.

During the 80's the Swindon Road Garage changed fuel companies for the garage. It was supplying Murco petrol, Shortly before this aerial photogragh was taken N&M Baker garage had a new MOT vehicle testing facility built. It is the white building which is in the top left corner of the image. You will notice that the garage had a forecourt perimeter fence seperating the petrol sales from the maintenance buildings.
