The Kelly's Directory of Wiltshire, 1867
illustrates the following commercial traders and inhabitants
within
the
village. The description provided: Lyneham is a village and
parish, in the Northern division of the county, Cricklade
anti Wootton Bassett union, Kingsbridge hundred, Calne county
court district, Avebury rural deanery. Wilts archdeaconry,
and Salisbury diocese, 4¼ miles south-west from Wootton
Bassett. The church of St. Michael is an ancient edifice,
in the Perpendicular style; has a low tower containing 5
bells, a nave and south aisle: it has lately been restored
by the lord of the manor and parishioners, at a cost of nearly £3,000,
and contains a monument to the Walker Heneage family. The
register dates from the year 1653. The living is a perpetual
curacy annual value £140, with 3 acres of glebe, in
the gift of G. H. W. Heneage, Esq., and held by the Rev.
Eyre W. Hussey M.A., of Christ Church, Oxford.
A school,
endowed with 25 acres of land producing about £39 per
annum, is now merged in the National school. The Great Western
Railway and the Wilts and Berks Canal pass within half a
mile of the parish. G. H. W. Heneage, Esq., is lord of the
manor and principal landowner. The soil is corn brash; subsoil,
sand. The chief crops are grass and wheat. The area is 3,242
acres, of which about one-half is arable and the other pasture,
and the population in 1861 was 1,034. The Parish Clerk, is
George Guy.
CLACK is a new district, formed for ecclesiastical
purposes, under the name of Bradenstoke-cum-Clack a mile
and a half west from Lyneham. The church is Gothic exceedingly
beautiful, and was erected by Gabriel Goldney, Esq., M.P.
The living is a perpetual curacy, annual value £150,
in the gift of Gabriel Goldney, Esq., M.P., and held by the
Rev. James Douglas Hoysted, M.A., of Trinity College, Dublin.
There is a National School, supported by the parishioners.
Fairs are held here at Michaelmas and Lady Day. Bradenstoke
Abbey is a farm-house, occupying the site of a priory for
Augustine monks, founded about 1142, and dedicated to the
Blessed Virgin, some parts of the present building are very
ancient. In the village is a dilapidated stone cross. Gabriel
Goldney, Esq., M.P., is lord of the manor and principal landowner.
Pepper Alley is one mile south-west; Church End, half a
mile south-east; Preston, a mile and a half southeast; Dauntsey
Park, one mile north-west. Parish Clerk Charles Norris.

through Chippenham office at 9.30 am; dispatched at 5.30
p.m. by foot messenger. The nearest money order office is
at Wootton Bassett
