Wiltshire's skyline is synonymous with
the giant Hercules aircraft. The Lockheed C130 Hercules
has been stationed at RAF Lyneham since 1967 and has
been a focal point of the skyline over Wiltshire.
The Hercules C-130 transport aircraft is the stalwart
of many military and civilian air forces around the
world, and affectionately know as Fat Albert. The 'Herc'
was first built and flown from the Lockheed Company's
Burbank runway in August 1954. The 'Herky Bird' has
gone on to see service in every corner of the globe.
This picture taken in March 2006 shows a C130K version
coming into land following a routine sortie. The approach
lights are located just north of St Michael's Close,
where the approaching aircraft appear to just clip the
rooftops of the buildings.
