This picture taken 2nd May 2009, shows the old building
which was the former station main guardroom, utilised
when the entrance to the airbase was located at the
Bradenstoke end of the airfield. The four pillar entrance
was a stereotype architecture for military station
guardrooms. When the main runway was extended to make
way for the Comet aircraft, the station main entrance
was moved from here to the entrance area next to the
A3102 Lyneham to Calne Road.
This building was used by the Aircraft Support Team
who used to wash the Hercules aircraft on the bay next
to the fenced area. Initially the aircraft were washed
by RAF teams but in 1997 the support services were
taken over by Hunting Contact Services, when a multi-activity
contract was awarded to save money on the airbase.
Mr Stanley Taylor was the foreman to the aircraft wash
teams who lived in the village and he was employed
at RAF Lyneham for over 41 years before his sudden
death. |
