Comet C2 XK699 Sagittarius 1961

This rare photograph, courtesy of Robin A Walker, shows De Havilland DH.106 Comet C2, XK699 at Heathrow Airport on the 30th July 1961. The later RAF Lyneham Gate Guardian Comet Mk2 XK699 named Sagittarius arrived at the airbase on the 16th October 1986, out of storage from RAF Henlow.

After six months restoration and tender loving care it was placed opposite the entrance roundabout in pristine condition. The aircraft was unveiled as the station gate guardian by Her Royal Highness The Princess Anne, Honorary Air Commodore on the 22nd June 1987.

The aircraft is located on the station entrance grid reference SU 022 785.
