This picture taken 2nd May 2009, shows the area
where the former Station Sub-Post Office was located
to the left next to the red pillar box. The old
store-room was demolished shortly after the Post
Master Mr Sid Skull moved into the former Lloyds
Bank white building here. The former post office
area here was laid to grass, and the buildings in the
background were used by the station estate maintenance
personnel.
The
area here has significant historical heritage to the
local community as it is the location where the former
Lyneham Court manor building stood prior to the Air
Ministry demolished it in 1939 to make way for the
new airbase which opened 18th May 1940.
The gigantic water towers were erected to improve
water pressure on the airbase as local mains water
supplies were poor on the 512 foot above sea level
plateau elevated airfield.
