RAF Lyneham was opened on 13 February
1940, and on 18 May the first unit was formed. This
was No.33 MU, established as an Aircraft Storage Unit
(ASU) under the command of No.41 Group, Maintenance
Command, which had its HQ at Andover.
No.33 MU was responsible for the reception, storage,
servicing and modification of aircraft. Initially these
came on delivery from the manufacturers, but later came
from other MUs or operational squadrons. The picture
shows civilian staff of No 33 Maintenance Unit working
on a Spitfire IXc outside the eastern end of D1 Hanger
RAF Lyneham during the Second World War.
