In the early 1980's St Michael Church
launched an appeal to re roof the rusting and leaking
roof the eatern part of the church above the alter and
nave. The project needed £12,000. The slates were
placed there in Victorian times were secured by iron
nails. Over decades of weathering they became to end
of their life and in need of urgent replacement.
Pitman's of Calne were contracted to reroof the church
in 1982 using mostly new slates but salvaging some of
the old. The roofing specialists were Ian, Ralph, Mick,
Steve and Derick.
