The White Hart Inn 1905

This picture of the White Hart Inn was taken by J.J. Hunt on the 13th April 1905 capturing Elsie and Gladis H. in the doorway. Described the village on the back of the picture as a quiet agricultural village until the air station was built in the Second World War.

The pub out house were used as a slaughter house for the local deer and games that was captured from Braydon Forest and local farms. The regular London to Bristol mail stagecoach used to use this as a stop off point to pick up the fresh venison, and take it on to Windsor castle estate. At first sight the building is in Jacobean style, but closer examination reveals that the old building has been refaced and survives inside, the chimneys in the same position being the best clue. The out buildings to the right have been replaced by a modern shop.

Do you know any other bygone village facts, who was the landlords, or do you you have a tale to tell with the pub life in Lyneham. If so please let us know so we can fill in the missing bygones of the village and share it with everyone else. Please contact the webmaster here.
