Thomas George Jones (1913 – 2008)

Born in the early spring of 1913 in Monmouth Monmouthshire.
Educated at Monmouth and regularly attended the Monmouth Baptist Chapel. On leaving school he worked as a grocery delivery boy on a bicycle.
Learnt mechanics and worked as a salesman.
Married in the spring of 1940, to Kathleen A. Stevens in Bushley Heath. Middlesex.
George as he is affectionately known, was then called into the Army and served at Dunkirk – he was in the water for 4 days before being rescued. After the war he served as a mechanic and salesman in Watford. Then, approximately 1960, he auditioned and was accepted into the Covent Garden Opera Company and so left his job and went on tour with the Convent Garden Company for about 5 years. Singing was great love all his days. He loved opera singing and also great hymns such as ‘Guide me O Thou Great Jehovah’ and ‘How Great Thou Art

For the last decade of his life he worshipped at Bradenstoke Baptist Church. Sadly he passed away 20th April 2008 and was buried in the graveyard at Bradenstoke Baptist Church on 1st May 2008. Bradenstoke Village Hall rear garden has undergone a major refurbishment programme to which it would not have been possible with out the generous bequeath from George Jones. A memorial bench has been purchased and is in pride and place within the rear garden.

The picture was taken 21st May 2005 with thanks to Shirley Smith, Bradenstoke
