Old Trooper House Bradenstoke

This photograph was taken on the 11th November 2007 of The Old Trooper House Bradenstoke which was the former Jolly Trooper public house. .

Located in the High Street Bradenstoke next to St Mary's Church this fine building was a very popular pub and many villagers from Lyneham frequented there. In front of the black Citroen car is the Market Cross which is currently used as the village War Memorial. In 1747, The Jolly Trooper acquired its name due to the Duke of Marlborough's troops being quartered in the vicinity. Previous to this, the name had been The Saracens Head, which as an Inn sign dates back to the time of Thomas a'Beckett whose mother was the daughter of a Saracen, suggesting that the building originates from the 14th Century. "Time" was finally called on 15th August, 1992.
