Festivals - Chippenham Viking Weekend

CHIPPENHAM celebrated it's Viking heritage when Guthrun the Dane in 880AD invaded the town. Months of preparation culminated in a three-day extravaganza in Monkton Park, from May 4th to 6th 2002, with the burning of a Viking long boat on the River Avon as the climax.

Two arena were set up for this free event, starting with a historical re-enactment group, Regia Anglorum, who put on show a full size replica of a long boat being set adrift on the river and set alight with burning arrows and torches, in a recreation of a warrior's funeral.

A Living History Exhibition depicted what everyday life was like for the Vikings. More than a hundred members of Regia Anglorum, living as Vikings, using, authentic tents, tools and cooking apparatus were on display. Rare animal breeds and a craft display were included.

The Events arena was used for demonstrations, with warriors battling horse-riding skills, Archery, Equestrianism, and the arming of a Gneat - a Viking knight.

The Viking ship burning ceremony took place at dusk on Sunday May 5th following a ferocious battle when a warrior was 'killed'. His corpse was approached by a number of bearers flanked by torch-carriers. He was carried towards the river. A boatman carried the body across to the replica ship moored in midstream, and archers on the bank threw fire-blazing arrows into the boat, as the flames leap into the dark night sky.

Traditional period stalls, in keeping with the nature of the event were available, including Spinners, Weavers, Lace Makers and Potters. Plenty of refreshments kept anyone fancying a Hog Roast or a jacket Potato nurished!
