Lyneham Green
The Lyneham Village Green was valued at £7 11s 11d in
1821 and was owned by seven people in the Tithe
apportionment supporting documention on the Walker
Heneage Tithe Map. The Green ownership was split in seventeen
parts and the majority was owned by Elizabeth Pullen who had
6/17th. The other owners were Jacob Gale, Thomas Yeo, Jacob
Simpkins and William Smith who each had 1/17th share. The
rest was split between Jacob Henly (2/17th's) John Hopkins
(3/17th's) and James Pullen (2/17th's).
The Lyneham and Bradenstoke Parish Council considered purchasing
The Green from October 2004. The green is protected by statute
and cannot be developed. Lyneham Village Green was owned by
the Heneage family who decided to sell The Green by auction.
However, the Lyneham
and Bradenstoke Parish Council prevailed upon them to
sell direct to the Council since it was strongly believed
by residents and councillors that it was imperative that The
Green be safeguarded as an important village asset. It was
decided to consult the parish to establish public opinion
on this project. Notices were erected on information boards,
properties on or adjoining the Village Green received a questionnaire
and the project details were published
on the village website. The Green is an attractive tree-lined
piece of land which runs through the heart of the village
and it is used by residents for both exercise and bird watching.
Some seating and an access path for wheelchairs is to be installed.
Viridor Credits allocated
£6,000 of landfill tax credits towards this project.
