Local Community - Hospitals

The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and research.

The Trust provides high quality general hospital services for the local population in Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties, and more specialist services for patients from a wide geographic area.

The Trust is made up of: The John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington, Oxford, (including the Children's Hospital and New West Wing), The Churchill Hospital in Headington, Oxford and The Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

The new buildings on the John Radcliffe and Churchill sites offer patients much better facilities aimed at enhancing their total experience of health care.

The John Radcliffe Hospital, in Headington, opened in the 1970s. It is the main accident and emergency site, and also provides acute medical and surgical services, trauma, intensive care, cardiac, women's services and children's services. The gastroenterology service based at the hospital has seen significant ward improvements in recent months. Conditions have been improved for both patients and staff.

Key developments within the hospital was the opening of the Surgical Emergency unit on level 6 of the John Radcliffe. Emergency surgical referrals can be fully assessed, and tests, admissions or procedures arranged quickly. The unit has reduced pressure on the accident and emergency department, and waiting times for surgical patients cut.

A new wing opened during 2007 provides Adult services that were moved from the former Radcliffe Infirmary, the a new area known as the West Wing. It provides modern, high quality and purpose-built accommodation for adult services, including: the neurosciences unit (neurology and neurosurgery, neurophysiology, neuropsychology, neuroradiology)
specialist surgery (ENT, plastic surgery, craniofacial surgery, the Oxford Eye Hospitals),
critical care facilities for specialist surgery and neurosurgery, a new day surgery unit, state of the art operating theatres and University of Oxford facilities. The building is light and airy, with good facilities for patients and visitors, including 3 coffee bars, shops, and a pharmacy close to one of the tea rooms and outpatient departments.

Children's Hospital

Children’s services in Oxford, have all moved to the purpose built Children’s Hospital. For the first time, this brings all children’s services in Oxford together in one purpose built environment.

Facilities from the atrium to the clinics and wards have been designed specifically for the welfare of children and teenagers. The hospital includes a spacious outpatients department next to a new children's radiology department and a paediatric assessment centre.

Children are treated here for a range of conditions including heart disease, chest disease, childhood cancer, neurological disorders and those requiring general or specialist surgery.

There is be accommodation for parents to stay overnight, either next to their child’s bed or in a dedicated parent/carers accommodation suite. The integration of children's services will offer many benefits for patients. For example, all children having major surgery will be close to intensive care: parents of disabled children will previously have had to travel between 3 sites for regular appointments will now only have to visit the one site.

For information about how to get to the Children's Hospital at the John Radcliffe, see the Oford hospital website click here
