Local Community - Medical - Dentist

Since childhood, most of our dental concerns have focused on the fear of getting “cavities” due to tooth decay. Tooth Decay (dental “caries”) is the decomposition of tooth structure caused by the destructive toxins creating by plaque, a combination of natural bacteria and food debris left on the teeth by inadequate oral hygiene.

Dental caries has been described as a “disease of civilisation,” especially applicable in the last one hundred years, as man has strayed from diets rich in fruits and vegetables to a high intake of refined sugars. Read the ingredients of today’s commercial food products – glucose, fructose, dextrose, etc. -- various forms of sugar.

Modern dentistry has succeeded in reducing the incidence of dental caries through water fluoridation, oral hygiene education, and preventive dental care that includes sealants, and conservative restorative treatment. “Cavities” are far less prevalent than they were several decades ago and may now be managed by advanced technology.

Generally Wiltshire is suffering from a shortage of NHS dentists, with only a handful taking on new adult patients. If you have already registered with a local dentist it is important that you keep to regular appointments. Some practices will strike you off their registered list if you continually fail to maintain appointments.

Chippenham Dental Access Centre
Chippenham Community Hospital

Chippenham

Tel: +44(0)1249 456633
The Dental Access Centre is not a 'drop-in' clinic. Patients should telephone for an appointment as early in the day as possible so that they can be offered the most appropriate time to deal with their urgent problem. Out of normal hours telephone advice can be given by NHS Direct.

The Dental Helpline staff can also give advice on dental practices registering new NHS patients. It is our policy to direct patients, where possible, to a general dental practice for registration.

Where time and staff are available, following completing of emergency sessions, patients can obtain routine care at a Dental Access Centre following an examination and treatment by a dental officer.
