Local Community - Library

Wiltshire's libraries play an important part in leisure and in recent years have diversified to offer records, cassettes, compact disc and videos. The Wiltshire library service is regarded as an essential element in providing better resources. Most funding for the Wiltshire library system comes from Wiltshire Council.

Membership of Wiltshire´s libraries is FREE for all people living or working in Wiltshire. Your library card will work in any Wiltshire library, and on our mobile libraries.

Swindon has been catapulted into the library Premier League with the opening of the town's new Central Library. With 77,000 books and 60 desks available for internet access, the new library cost £10 million pounds to build, and replaced the 'temporary' library which sat on the same site for over 30 years. The new three-storey building also features a cafe, a Learning Zone for tuition in computer skills, a Leisure Zone for families and a specialist Family and Local History section.

Swindon Local Studies Collection is based in the Central Library. It contains a large collection of printed material, with special emphasis on Swindon and the surrounding parishes, together with the Great Western Railway. In October 2008 it moved back to Regent Circus. For further details weblink
