The major source of employment in Lyneham is
derived on the airbase, currently employing over 2500 service
personnel and around 750 civilian employees. Lyneham is considered
a dormitory village in respect of other employment, in that
many of the non-service families tend to travel locally for
their employment. Swindon is a major source of employment
for residents, both engineering and business type.
There are limited businesses in the proximity of Lyneham
that employ over 20 staff, many are small shops, pubs or food
takeaway’s. Unemployment is low at 2.5% but around 40%
of the working population commute out of the area. Given that
the village population on the electoral roll is around 3100
people, full time local job opportunities are few.
Regeneration of industry employment opportunities in the
future as a result of the planned closure of the airbase by
2012 must be seriously considered. Future development of the
estate should be measured with the type of business opportunity.
The high number of skilled engineering manpower currently
working on the airbase, if those skilled opportunities are
not made available in the future, there will be some economic
implications within family budgets who are on higher than
average salaries.
