All Town and Parish councils have been asked what extra
facilities they would like to take on, as a result of the unitary
council changes 1st April 2009. The Parish Council will be invited
to attend Area Board meetings, which will be their main platform
for asking for changes. Any planning applications that the PC
want to be brought to committee will have to go through their
Unitary Councillor and they will have to work
closely with said councillor.

As a result of a bid to become One Council was first
submitted by Wiltshire County Council in response to
a central government white paper entitled ‘Strong
and Prosperous Communities’. The Council system
has made some significant changes. This was an invitation
to all councils in areas made up of more than one council,
such as county, borough and district, to put forward
bids to create a new single or 'unitary' council. The
former District Councils (and the County Council) all
ended on 31st March 2009, the identity pass into history
and so will the name. On 1st April 2009 the new Unitary
council named Wiltshire Council came into
force. The aim of the unitary council transforming from
five authorities into one is hoped to bring significant
efficiency savings and improve services for all communities
in Wiltshire, working towards:
Strong
customer focus High
quality, low cost services Strong
and successful communities Transparent
local government
