| The Tower is described
by distinguished architectural historian, Professor N Pevsner
as:
"a short west tower, perpendicular style," the
tracery in the belfry windows is early perpendicular as
also are the
west and south doorways. The south door has a fine niche
above it on the external wall, now within the porch.
The Tower Screen is of carved wood and dates from the Jacobean
period. It was probably part of a private pew, or screening
for a chapel at the east end of the North
Aisle, removed during the rebuilding operations in 1863.
The woodwork is now in rough condition and has modern colouring
on it, but it has a certain charm and elegance in its present
functional position screening the choir vestry and ringing
chamber. |
